General Manager: Gorge Vale Golf Club

Founded in 1927, Gorge Vale is a private golf club located minutes from downtown Victoria, British Columbia. The Club features a classic parkland course designed by A.V. Macan, recognized for its strategic layout, natural terrain, and mature tree-lined corridors.
Gorge Vale has a long-standing reputation for delivering a high-quality golf experience in a welcoming, member-focused environment. With a strong and engaged membership, the Club continues to evolve— balancing its rich heritage with thoughtful investment in facilities, infrastructure, and programming to meet the expectations of our members.

The Club has 700 playing members and a total membership of 950. Gorge Vale members are very active playing 58,000 rounds in 2025. Demand for membership is healthy with a waitlist of approximately 1 year. The Club has consistently generated operating surpluses and has established dedicated funding for capital replacement. The Club has made significant investments in the Course and practice facilities; enhancing both the playability and aesthetics, as well as improving maintenance capabilities.

Job Summary
The General Manager (GM) is responsible for the overall leadership, performance, and long-term success of the Club. Reporting directly to the Club President and accountable to the Board of Directors, the GM operates as both chief operating officer and strategic leader, ensuring an exceptional member experience while guiding the Club’s financial health and capital planning. The role places particular emphasis on ensuring a high-quality golf experience, promoting member events and functions, while exercising strong financial management and leadership skills.
Responsibilities

1. Member Experience & Club Culture

  • Promotes, attracts and facilitates the entry of new members
  • Builds strong, trust-based relationships with members and responds proactively to feedback
  • Actively fosters a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment
  • Acts as a visible and engaged presence within the Club
  • Responsive to member feedback and suggestions

2. President and Board of Directors

  • Establishes and maintains a strong working relationship with the Club President
  • Keeps the President informed of issues that arise in a timely fashion
  • Ensures the Board is provided with the necessary information to make its decisions at Board meetings
  • Maintains an environment of collegiality between the Board and Club staff

3. Operational Leadership

  • Provides management and leadership of the senior management team - Food & Beverage Manager, Head Golf Professional, and Course Superintendent
  • Directly supervises the Administration Office Staff and the Clubhouse Maintenance Staff
  • Maintains a high-performance culture amongst the Staff
  • Leads the management and negotiation of the contract with unionized staff

4. Financial Management

  • Develops and manages annual operating budgets
  • Monitors performance across all departments
  • Provides clear, transparent financial reporting and forecasting to the Board
  • Leads long-term planning for the Club’s physical assets, including the golf course, irrigation system, maintenance equipment, and the clubhouse
  • Works with the Board to prioritize capital projects and ensure financial sustainability
  • Identifies opportunities to strengthen the Club’s financial position over time
Qualifications
  • Proven experience in a senior leadership role within a private club, golf, or hospitality environment
  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, and capital allocation
  • Experience working closely with a Board of Directors or similar governance structure
  • Deep understanding of member-driven organizations and service expectations
  • Completion or working towards Club Manager Accreditation
Compensation
$125,000 - 190,000 per year, based on experience - plus benefits.
