The Canadian PGA welcomes Gregg Schubert and Steve Wood to the National Board of Directors
The Canadian PGA would like to welcome Gregg Schubert as the Alberta National representative, and Steve Wood as the Manitoba National representative for the National Board of Directors.
There is no other career that has ever interested or captivated Gregg Schubert like becoming a Golf Professional. The passion for his career started early as a junior member at the Broadmoor Golf Course in Sherwood Park, Alberta. Gregg always felt a connection to the game and once he was given the opportunity in 1990 to work in the Golf Shop by Canadian PGA Head Golf Professional Ron Belbin, he was hooked.
That was 18 years ago and now he is starting his 16th year as a Member of the Canadian PGA. He is entering his fifth season as Head Golf Professional at the Cottonwood Golf & Country Club in Calgary, Alberta, working with Tiffany Gordon, the 2005 Canadian PGA Club Professional of the Year.
Over the years Gregg has worked at a number of golf courses throughout Alberta and for a number of great mentors. Ken Matson, Ron Belbin, Kent Adams, Larry Purpur, Dean Walker, Wib Lamb, Grant Cammidge and Tiffany are all Canadian PGA Members who have been instrumental in the development of his career as a Golf Professional.
Gregg has been an active member within the PGA of Alberta. He started his second stint on the PGA of Alberta Board of Directors in March of 2007 as a co-chair of the Membership and Employment portfolio. Previously, Gregg served as the Assistants’ President on the main Board in Alberta from 1996 to 2000. He has been recognized by his peers in Alberta by winning Assistant Professional of the Year in 1996 and 1998. He has also been involved as a committee member and volunteer of the Consumer Shows in Alberta.
“I was honored to be chosen by my fellow Board members to represent Alberta on the National Board of Directors. I know that I have the support and trust of my Zone to represent both the Alberta PGA and the Canadian PGA as a National Director. I look forward to working closely with the National Office and the National Board of Directors to create and enhance the careers of current and future Canadian PGA Members.”
Gregg currently lives in south Calgary, Alberta with his wife Nicole and their two kids Nolan and Taylor.
Steve Wood started his career in the golf industry at Rossmere Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg where he developed his game as a junior golfer to eventually turn Professional in 1994. That year, he was fresh out of Red River Community College with a diploma in Business Administration and working under the wing of Craig Yahiro, who remains the Head Professional at Rossmere today. “Craig was an excellent mentor,” states Steve, “I actually continue to stay in close contact with him to this day.”
After three years at Rossmere, Steve decided to accept a position at South Interlake Golf & Country Club under Head Professional, Derek Ingram, in 1997. Having had the privilege of working under two exceptional Professionals in his younger years, Steve mentions that he has no doubt in his mind that they greatly contributed to getting him where he is today.
Derek Ingram left South Interlake in 1998 and Steve took over for his first Head Professional position, where he stayed for an additional two seasons. Steve’s time at South Interlake was very valuable as he gained tremendous experience working as a Head Professional, learning how to run his own golf business and improving his playing ability (not to mention meeting his future wife).
In 2000, Steve made the move to Kitchen Creek Golf & Country Club as the Head Professional and General Manager, where he stayed until the end of the 2005 golf season. All of his experiences landed Steve at Bel Acres Golf & Country Club as the Head Professional and General Manager, where he has worked since 2006. For Steve the club has been an excellent fit and he believes that he could see himself working there for quite some time.
Steve has served on the Manitoba Zone Board of Directors for the past seven years where he recently finished his term as the Zone President and is now filling the Manitoba National Representative position. “I am looking forward to the upcoming months at the National level as this is a very important time in the history of the Canadian PGA,” states Steve.
He currently resides in Winnipeg, Manitoba with his wife Michelyn and two kids Elle and Payne.
